Bill (William Lawrence) Naughton, aka Salty Dog Bill, Buffalo, Brother Bill, Taco Bill, Willie, Mr. Sunshine and /or “UNCLE GRUMPY”, passed away on May 31st after a life filled with surfing, adventure, music, laughter and countless friends who loved him. Born May 20, 1946, his early life was spent with his beloved parents in Palatka, Florida. He moved to the area in the mid-1960’s, and although he traveled the world in pursuit of his dreams, the Daytona Beach area remained his home. His deep friendships transcended the passage of time and in them, he brought people together to celebrate the joy of living. Bill absolutely loved surfing and all things related. Surfing for over 50 years, he was fortunate enough to travel to may exotic surfing destinations, which included his favorite locales of Hawaii, Fiji, Ecuador, Mexico, the Bahamas and all of Central America. Bill was always the first to strike up a conversation with other traveling surfers. Because of his BIG BILL SMILE and great stories, he would within minutes be their new best friend. He knew so many people in the surf industry and will be deeply missed by the many friends whose lives he touched along the way. A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 7:00 am on Saturday, June 29 on the beach in front of Winterhaven Park in Ponce Inlet. Those of us left to cherish those good times wish you God Speed, Bill on your next great adventure. We are left with only memories of your antics that will continue to make us laugh and cry and that bind us together solely because we love you. The next good wave is for you, Bill.
